• Rug guide – finding the right one for your home

A rug has the power to transform a room. It frames the space, softens the atmosphere, softens sound and adds warmth – both in feeling and in expression. A generously sized rug anchors the room, while a smaller one can define a space within it. The size influences the balance between openness and intimacy, and what works best will vary from room to room.

By choosing rugs in similar colour tones – but ideally with different textures – you create a gentle sense of harmony throughout your home. The same calm is achieved when the rug is seen as part of the background (preferably in a neutral shade) rather than as a bold accent piece.

When selecting a rug, it’s worth considering not only the whole character of the room but also the interplay with your furniture. To guide you along the way, we’ve gathered a few simple principles.

    Bedroom

A rug in the bedroom brings stillness and a soft, embracing atmosphere. It absorbs sound, adds comfort and adds warmth to cool floors. Earthy tones and natural colour variations often blend beautifully with interiors inspired by nature.

    Choosing the right size

    - A rug placed under the bed should cover a generous part of the floor to create both calm and warmth in your bedroom.
    - Avoid rugs that end halfway under the bed. If a larger rug won’t fit, consider two runners on either side of the bed for a balanced impression.

The size of the rug sets the tone for the entire space. A smaller rug creates an airy feeling, while a medium-sized rug – large enough for the front legs of the sofa to rest on – helps tie the seating area together. A larger rug offers a more embracing atmosphere and works especially well in open-plan layouts. It unifies the seating area and creates a room within the room, while also adding to a more pleasant acoustic. Notice how rug and furniture interact – the balance is key to creating harmony.

    Choosing the right size

    - At the very least, let the front legs of the sofa rest on the rug.
    - For larger rugs: place the entire sofa, armchairs and coffee table on the rug.
    - Too small a rug risks breaking up the room.
    - Ideally, the rug should extend at least 20 cm wider than the sofa.
