Soap as a surface treatment brings out the natural lightness in the wood. A piece of furniture treated with soap tends to be slightly lighter/whiter and takes on a greyer tone.

    Contents & the environment

Paint and unperfumed soap flakes. Mainly made from vegetable-based raw materials – products from nature herself.

    Day-to-day maintenance

We treat the furniture with soap before delivery. Furniture that is not intended for meals only needs to be soaped when necessary. Usually all that is needed is dusting with a dry cloth. The wood in dining tables needs a number of treatments with soap to make the surface withstand marks. In the early days, a spill on a soaped surface will always leave a mark. This means it is important to top up the soap treatment to build a resistant surface over time. Dining tables should be regularly maintained with a soap solution, ideally once a week (soap flakes for this purpose can be bought in our stores and our online shop). This sounds more labour-intensive than it actually is – use the soap instead of washing up liquid on a cloth when wiping the table down. After a while, the surface will be easy to maintain (compare with traditional wood floors).

Soaped surfaces are the treatment we get the most questions about and we have therefore tested spilling red wine, coffee, tea, etc. on soaped table tops. We found these spills were easy to remove. Grease marks are the hardest to remove and may need sanding. Some tougher stains will also fade over time.

IF YOU NEED TO CARRY OUT MORE IN-DEPTH MAINTENANCE, HERE’S OUR ADVICE

Clean the furniture with hot water and a soft sponge, e.g. a washing up sponge, that won’t scratch, or a soft nail brush. Scrub with a brush if the table has got very dirty. Leave the wood to dry. Sand the surface with sandpaper if necessary, e.g. if there are lots of grease stains. Add 2–3 coats of soap treatment using a sponge or cloth, leaving half an hour in between each coat. Leave the surface to dry completely. Sand away any fibres that have risen to the surface using fine sandpaper (400 grit) for a really smooth surface. Always sand in the direction of the grain. Wipe with a dry cloth. And you’re done!

Tip! Keep a container of ready-mixed soap solution under the draining board for easy, regular maintenance. When you see a mark, wipe the surface. Then wipe with your soap solution. Soap is completely non-toxic and leaves no trace – you can roll out your bread or pastry on your table top and the dough won’t take on any weird flavours.
