Soap as a surface treatment brings out the natural lightness in the wood. A piece of furniture treated with soap tends to be slightly lighter/whiter and takes on a greyer tone.

Day-to-day maintenance
We treat the furniture with soap before delivery. Furniture that is not intended for meals only needs to be soaped when necessary. Usually all that is needed is dusting with a dry cloth. The wood in dining tables needs a number of treatments with soap to make the surface withstand marks. In the early days, a spill on a soaped surface will always leave a mark. This means it is important to top up the soap treatment to build a resistant surface over time. Dining tables should be regularly maintained with a soap solution, ideally once a week (soap flakes for this purpose can be bought in our stores and our online shop). This sounds more labour-intensive than it actually is – use the soap instead of washing up liquid on a cloth when wiping the table down. After a while, the surface will be easy to maintain (compare with traditional wood floors).
Soaped surfaces are the treatment we get the most questions about and we have therefore tested spilling red wine, coffee, tea, etc. on soaped table tops. We found these spills were easy to remove. Grease marks are the hardest to remove and may need sanding. Some tougher stains will also fade over time.
