“Norrgavel’s Pinn chair has been in the range since 2010. Even back then, the idea was to add an armchair; the only question was how.
Historically, we can see beautiful and amazingly comfortable Windsor chairs of the comb back type, where the arms continue round the entire back of the chair with all the spindles of the back drilled through. However, more minimalist spindle back chairs – like Norrgavel’s – often have just a short arm attached to the outermost spindle of the back, which does not feel entirely convincing. I wanted the arms to melt more organically into the design of the chair and was delighted when I came up with the idea of letting the outermost back spindle swing out and form the arm rest itself. This happened in 2016 so it was a long road from idea to reality. The design came quite quickly and the balanced strength of the chair exceeded expectations, but the biggest challenge was manufacturing the almost right-angled bend. To achieve maximum strength and to avoid a visible join, we finally ended up with a layer-glued design.
As is usually the case, Pinn armchair has been given slightly more generous measurements than the ordinary spindle back chair and they look beautiful together around a table.”
